Summary; section 5.1

Summary
  • carbon form bond w/ one or more carbon atoms
  • variety of carbon skeltons
  • carbon-base molecules = organic molecules
  • non-carbon-based = inorganic molecules
  • carbon bonds w/ other elements
  • organic molecule (hydrocarbon) = only carbon + hydrogen
  • Methane = abundant hydrocarbon
  • group of atoms that react in predictable way = functional group
  • carbon skeleton + fuctional group decide properties of organic molecules
  • hydroxly groups are water attracting or hydrophilic
  • monomer make up polymers
  • polymer = straight chain or branching or chains that fold
  • four catergories - large molecules
  • carbohydrate, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acid
  • monomer added to chain, water released
  • called dehydration reaction, remove water
  • to break chain, add water
  • hydrolysis reaction, water is added

Concept Check
1. A molecule with three carbon skeltons, hydroxyl group in the middle

2. Monomers release water to link into chains of polymers
3. During a process of making a polymer, water is released and this is called a dehydration reaction because water is lost
4. Here are three ways in which 5 carbon atoms can be joined
